DO YOUR DESIGN PIECES FIT YOUR SPACE?

A frequently overlooked design principle is scale and proportion. This princple revolves around how items fit together in your newly designed space. Proportion is how well your design pieces fit together. Scale refers to how well the pieces fit in your space. While this is a mathematical interior design principle, your eye can easily identify when something looks oversized and out of place. People often choose pieces that are too big or small for their space. It’s better to prioritize everyday use over seasonal occasions. I know it is tempting to buy a piece of furniture that fits your entire extended family when they visit, it is important to remember that visiting family isn’t always there.  A general guideline when adding design pieces is to choose pieces that are no taller or wider than one-third the length or the height of the piece it will sit on. Doing this results in a natural rhythm and flow to your new space.
